This three-bedroom family home located near the busy commercial district of Causeway Bay, HK is due for a revamp after being lived in for over two decades. The main objective is to de-clutter the mess, bring overlooked family treasures into focus and allow the living space to cater evolving needs of all family members. The proposed concept introduced a series of built-in storage units that is visually uncluttered integrating with the display of a variety of curated objects gifted from family and friends and collected throughout the years. On a sentimental level, giving each memory object a place of its own is important precipitating precious memories and emotional attachments.
For example, a Chinese paper-thin porcelain bowl that was once on display at the family-owned restaurant and a pair of Chinese crafted bone cranes that were passed on from Jonathan’s late grandparents, along with six other prized possessions are placed back-lit at the sides of the TV cabinet to create a hearth as a focal point where family and friends gather.
The natural material palette is also fused with hand-crafted elements to reflect the intricate artisanship of the objects. A meticulously hand-tufted area rug in intertwining grids is paired with a woven wallpaper as a subtle display backdrop. Cabinet door handles, bathroom mirror cabinets and custom lighting fixture are in hand-patinated brass as finishing touches. The result is a well-balanced interior in neutral tones that exudes sophistication and comforts for the family to wind down from busy days.
A variety of collectibles displayed at the white oak bookshelf with wood-slates side detailing adds personal touch to the dining room where the family is first greeted.
